I was born in 1991 and grew up surrounded by dogs. Friska, my first dog, was the one who truly shaped my bond with animals. I grew up watching my parents care for injured stray animals, bringing them home, healing them, and adopting them. That compassion became a part of me very early in life, and I always felt a deep desire to do something meaningful for animals. A very big part of that compassion also comes from my family legacy. I am the granddaughter of Dr. Shailendra Nath Chatterjee, a renowned and deeply respected doctor from Hooghly district, West Bengal. He graduated from Calcutta Medical College, but gave up the opportunity to practice in Kolkata because his heart belonged to the villages. He chose to return home to serve the poor and needy, at a time when villages had almost no access to proper medical care. His life of sacrifice, empathy, and service became one of my greatest inspirations a silent force that shaped the values I carry today. One incident changed everything for me. We had to travel and leave Friska at a pet boarding facility. Back then, proper pet care services barely existed. The place we left her at was not suitable, and she fell sick. Eventually, we lost her. That loss planted a question in my mind: Why isn’t there a safe, reliable space where pet parents can leave their pets without fear or guilt? That question became the seed of Doggo, the dog crèche I later started. While managing the crèche hands-on and caring for stray animals on the streets, I realized another major gap: the divide between general veterinary care and emergency veterinary care. There was no comprehensive place that brought everything under one roof. My vision grew clearer to build a complete ecosystem for pets, offering boarding, grooming, veterinary services, and pet accessories, all under one name and one roof. I am Sukanta Chatterjee, born in the serene village of Hoera in West Bengal. My childhood was surrounded by fields, trees, open skies, and the constant presence of animals who freely lived among us. I grew up in a family where compassion flowed naturally. My father, Shailendra Nath Chatterjee, was a renowned doctor from Calcutta Medical College. But he never wanted to stay and practice in the city. His dream was to serve the needy people in the village. At a time when there were no doctors in the rural areas, he chose to return home and dedicate his life to helping the poor. He was deeply loved and respected by everyone people and animals alike. I watched him heal the sick, comfort the needy, and treat every living being with the same empathy. His life has always been a guiding light for me, and much of who I am today comes from the example he set. From a very young age, animals were my closest companions. I never had to seek them they always found me. The female dogs in our home trusted me so deeply that whenever they had puppies, they would tug gently at my pajama, pulling me along with urgency, eager to show me where they had hidden their newborns. Moments like these taught me that love and trust don’t need language they need only sincerity. Among all the animals who shared their lives with me, three dogs hold a permanent place in my heart: Muri was the gentle mother of the house. She treated me like I was part of her pack. Every time she had pups, she would come running, pulling at my clothes to show me her babies. She believed in me, trusted me, and made me understand what true responsibility feels like. Parre was a free-spirited Indie, roaming the village as he pleased but returning to me every single day. He was not tied to a home, but his heart was tied to mine. Through him, I learned that love doesn’t require ownership it requires acceptance and respect. Metro, one of Muri’s male pups, was full of life, mischief, and absolute loyalty. He was adored by my entire family. His antics became stories we still laugh about: stealing hens from neighbors, tugging the pajamas of suspicious-looking strangers, fearlessly chasing away thieves, and guarding our home like it was the center of his world. Metro brought joy, laughter, and courage into our lives. He was not just a dog he was family. These animals shaped my childhood, my character, and my heart. They taught me unconditional love, protection, loyalty, and compassion. And that knowledge, that compassion, and that way of living is what I have imparted to my daughter. Seeing her grow into a person who carries the same love I grew up with makes me believe that compassion is a legacy and mine continues through her. Animals have been my teachers, my companions, and a part of my soul. Whatever kindness I show today, it is because of the lessons I learned from them and from my father a man loved by all and remembered with respect.
